On October 1st, we lost a dear member of the Habitat Family and a titan in the Greater Lafayette community. We mourn the passing of John Scheumann while simultaneously celebrating the tremendous impact he’s made on our community and our organization.

It’s hard to quantify John’s contributions to Habitat, as his comforting hand shows up so often and in so many ways throughout our organization. Yes, he’s helped us build dozens of homes. Yes, he’s provided us with land, materials, interest-free loans, donations, and more. But he’s also shaped the way we think about growing and running a successful organization. He’s provided fundamental insights that shape the way we view the process of building homes and serving our community. He’s graciously shared his wisdom, opened doors, and facilitated connections that have enabled us continually get better at meeting our mission.

In 1999, John sponsored and built his first house for Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette. Over the next 20 years, John’s companies--Crossmann Communities and Tempest Homes--built over 20 homes for Habitat of Lafayette.

From 2001-2007 John partnered with Habitat to build Bristol Park, a 100 home subdivision in which 50 homes were built for Habitat partner families.

Over the years, John has served on the State board of directors, donated land for numerous builds, advocated for Habitat, provided interest-free loans, stocked the ReStore with high-quality construction material, and so much more. He’s spent countless hours with us sharing his vision and solving problems in an effort to make the Greater Lafayette community a better place to live.

We’ll miss his straight-shooting demeanor. We’ll miss his ability to make hard problems seem easy. We’ll miss his ability to make things happen. We’ll miss his kindness. We’ll miss his love for his family and his community. But most of all, we’ll miss our friend.

John, your legacy lives on through the thousands of people who have benefited from your attention, your care, and your generosity.

And your spirit will be a constant comfort in our community as the seeds sown by your hands continue to bloom and bear fruit for untold generations to come.

Thank you, friend. We’ll miss you dearly. Now rest in peace.

For those wishing to contribute in John's name, you can make a gift here.
