Burgundy and Sons Cody and Ryler

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.”

Psalm 127:1

M Burgundy Spears is a single mom with two young sons, Cody and Ryler. She attended Clinton Prairie schools through middle school, where she played guard on the basketball team and ran cross country. Burgundy moved to Lafayette and began her freshman year at Jefferson High School. She graduated from Jeff after Cody was born. Like many young mothers, Burgundy has placed her specific educational goals on temporary hold. Burgundy feels fortunate to have the support of her family and also the continued support of two very special friends, Britney and Paige, with whom she has spent quality time since childhood.

Cody is six years old and attends first grade at Woodland Elementary School. Each day, he rides the bus to school where he enjoys “counting to 100.” After school, he spends time with his grandparents and visits his dad on weekends. Cody’s spare time is spent riding his bike, playing, and swimming. Once a week, he takes a Karate class. He recently had a nighttime visit from the tooth fairy after he lost a front tooth. Cody wants a puppy when he moves to his new home.

Ryler is a very social one year old. At the playground, he crawls toward other children and seems fascinated by their actions. Ryler has six teeth, walks holding on to the playground bench, and says three words: “Mama,” “Dada,” and “Bubba.” Ryler enjoys being read to by his mother and being entertained by Cody.

Burgundy works at Wabash Center and is close to her parents, sisters, and friends, Britney and Paige. Her friends and family are proud of Burgundy for many reasons. One particular reason is because of her determination to work toward having her own home. She was very excited when she received the call from Habitat that said that she had been approved for a new home. When asked why she wants a home of her own, she answers, “for stability for my boys.” Having space for a puppy for Cody is another motivator. Burgundy is excited to attend homeowner classes and to complete her sweat equity hours.

Burgundy feels fortunate to have the support of her family.
