Reaktyta, Margarita, Ricardo, and Dog Pixie

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.”

Psalm 127:1

R eakyta Covington, her daughter Margarita, son Ricardo, and dog Pixie live in a three-bedroom trailer that Reakyta has improved by adding an attractive carpet and paint and updating her appliances. Reakyta was born in Champaign, Illinois and moved to West Lafayette in 2000. She has been a single mom for many years. She also has a 21-year-old son, Chase, but he lives elsewhere. Reakyta has had some continuing health problems from a no-fault-of-her-own motor vehicle accident two years ago that injured her and Ricardo. She is currently employed at McDonald’s Restaurant in West Lafayette. She has been working toward her goal of homeownership for 14 years and has proudly “cleared her credit rating.”

Ricardo, 13 years of age, is called “Dew” by his mother. Dew in in the 7th grade at Klondike Middle School. He says he does not like to eat vegetables but does enjoy eating the turkey and ham that his mom cooks. He describes himself as a “jokester” and his mom as “a good spirit.” Margarita is a good student who likes art and choir; she will become a freshman at Harrison High School in August.

Reakyta is a gentle soul who until 2014 had long hair that reached her lower back. In May 2014, Reakyta cut her long hair and donated it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children.

Recently, she has dedicated her efforts to growing her sweat equity hours with Habitat. Given Reakyta’s long term-goal of homeownership and her successful do-it-yourself home projects, she is well positioned for success in attaining her Habitat home. Each family member — Reakyta, Dew and Margarita — looks forward to having a home of their own in a nice neighborhood.
