who qualifies

Do you qualify for Habitat homeownership?

Since being founded in 1984, Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette has completed approximately 300 homes. Today, we’re able to fund and build 12 to 15 houses a year for low-income individuals and families.

qualifications for homeownership

Interested in applying to become a Habitat homeowner? You must:

1. have a need for housing.

Your present housing conditions must be inadequate, meaning they are overcrowded, unsafe, or too expensive for your income.

2. be willing to partner.

Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette works with families to build each house. In addition to working on your home and others, applicants must complete “sweat equity” requirements — which are hours of labor working on your home, other homes, or in the ReStore. Every applicant who is 18 years or older must complete 250 hours of sweat equity, and children who are 16 or 17 must complete 100 hours.

3. have the ability to repay your mortgage.

While credit reports are considered, they do not have to be perfect to become a homeowner. Rather, outstanding debt plus current monthly expenses are compared to determine whether mortgage payments can be made. Please note that there will be a $1,000 escrow deposit required at the time of closing.
